SMITH & HAWKEN® TOP TEN: REFRESH THE FRONT PORCH FOR FALL - Welcome the Season with Autumn Accents That Increase Curb Appeal

According to Jennifer Sypeck, director of trend at Smith & Hawken, "Front porch styles can range from a classic cottage look to a more traditional elegance or have a casual rustic charm, but no matter the style, the entry to any home should always be welcoming." Following are ten ideas for creating a fresh front porch look for fall.

1. "Leave the Light On" - As days grow shorter, a light on at the front door not only increases safety, it also feels inviting to guests and residents alike. Hang a pendant light or a wall sconce or two to add brilliant style.

2. "Light it Up" - For additional lighting, line stairs or walkways with lanterns or luminaries to add a warm, welcoming glow from the sidewalk to the doorway.

3. "Walk All Over You" - Whether it's coir, teak or rubber, a good doormat will not only add a decorative touch to the front door, it will also help prevent dirt and mud from getting tracked inside. For those on a budget, adding a colorful coir doormat is easy and affordable at $39.

4. "Keep It Contained" - Flank a doorway or path with oversized containers to make a grand statement. When choosing large containers, go with fiberstone, copper or zinc as they are frost resistant and won't need to be moved inside during cold weather.

5. "Grow On" - Lush foliage, a dried branch arrangement, an olive or citrus tree, or colorful flowers add life to entrances.

6. "Door Flair" - Don't have a front porch? No matter, an autumnal wreath hung on the door adds instant fall style to any size home.

7. "Pull Up a Chair" - A rocking chair, glider or bench on the front porch inspires hours of relaxation or an old-fashioned long visit with friends and neighbors on a crisp fall day.

8. Window boxes - Planted up with sturdy foliage or filled with fall elements, a window box or two dresses up the front of the house. Add an over-the-rail bracket to window boxes and hang them there instead of or in addition to front windows.

9. "Make a Stand" - Statuary at front entrances makes a real impact in terms of expressing personal style - lions and spheres ooze elegance, cherubs say romance, and gnomes are all about the whimsy.

10. "In Season" - Seasonal accents, such as gourds, pumpkins, corn stalks, etc that are harvested from the garden or a local pumpkin patch add an inexpensive, yet personal touch to the front door. At the holidays, switch out harvested items with fresh greens.
